Estee awoke later that day a bit confused. After a drink of the potion Arland had prepared for her, she questioned him, “Ye said the rest of our company is gone? I remember that I passed by ye to check around when a sharp, hot pain stabbed my shoulder. I heard Jezie warn the others of the attack as I blacked out.”

“I am afraid they were taken prisoners,” said Arland.

“Where are the Stones?

“The Stones are safe with me.”

“And our friends?”

“Perhaps the Gold Elfs will free them when we get there. How are ye feeling?” he asked.

“My shoulder hurts … is stiff, but I am well,” she said. “What are we going to do now?”

“After I take ye back to your people, I will take the Stones to the lake.”

“My people are too far away to go there first.” She tried to sit up and fell back to the ground with a thud.

“Estee, My Lady, do not move; ye have an infection. I cleaned it the best I could, ye should be better in no time.”

“We need to go now. Please, they will find ye and the Stones…”

“If ye rest, yer wound will stay closed. Ye lost some blood, before I found ye.”

“Are ye going to fight me on this all the way? I am too tired to argue with ye.”

“It will do us no harm to wait a bit, My Princess. I promise.”

Once again the tea did its job, and she slept for a few more hours. By midday however, the battle started again.

“We have no time for rest,” she complained.

“We will stay for a few hours. If ye feel better late this afternoon, we will continue. I promise.”

“Please go and complete our quest. For all of us!”

“I will never leave ye alone,” he told her. “It is too dangerous.”

She frowned but said nothing more.

“Estee,” Arland said after a long moment of cuddling her. “Why did ye not tell us who ye are?”

“Because, ye would not have let me join ye, or wouldst have treated me like ye treat me now.”

“We would have never exposed ye to such danger,” he told her. “Ye are right that if we had known, we would have guarded ye. Yer beauty would have blinded us to the quest and its dangers. Ye were wise to not tell us.” He helped her sit straighter. “Still, what madness forced ye to join us?”

“I needed to redeem my mother’s name and the trust of my people.”

“Nobody held ye responsible,” said Arland. “Yer people love ye and cannot function without ye.”

“Perhaps they were stunned, but it could be that they were ashamed. How can they be proud to serve me?”

“Yer people would have served ye, no matter what, My Lady.”

“But I would wonder, and I would feel responsible. I had to do it for them, for my kingdom.”

“Yes, yer kingdom,” said Arland, resenting the sound of that.

He pondered, ‘Is now a good time to talk about the Brown Elfs’ return to yer kingdom?’ Looking at her, he decided to not mention it as her eyes had closed for the moment.
